What I do at Oregon Mentors

Crack jokes, sing songs, practice sarcasm, and write about the impact in a child’s life when an adult steps up to make a difference. Sometimes my work garners more volunteers, sometimes more program resources – either’s great.

Pictured here

While wandering through the upper streets of Tallinn, Estonia I passed a series of concrete swans perched along the paths — ready to provide a weary traveler with a photo opportunity.

Why I like my job

I know that mentoring a child can expand his perception about what is possible in his life.

And daily: I’m learning from fantastic people who are so smart and creative and want to change things for the better.

What I do when I’m not working

Read, occasionally (used to be frequently) knit, drink red wine, spend time with my lovely husband Robert and my great friends, and enjoy living in one of the most fantastic small cities in the world.

Person who mentors me

Life learning is an important goal so I look to most everyone for some enrichment.

Person I mentor

I’ve been a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) working for the same young man for 10 years. And while my role extends that of a traditional mentor, because of the number of years I’ve known him, he’s thanked me for being a trusted friend. And I echo that same sentiment -- his impact -- in my life.

Favorite place in Oregon

My living room – sitting in my grandmother’s chair with my cat Finn in my lap; cup of steaming coffee in my mug; design magazine in my hand. But Wi-Ne-Ma on the coast runs a close second.
